KEEPING THE CONNECTION
October 5th, 2005

The Career Center offers high school students several options to meet their career goal and scheduling needs. Studies have shown that typically those students who participate in athletics, band, and/or other school clubs and activities are more successful in the overall realm of school than those who do not choose to participate. By encouraging their students to continue with their associate school activities, the Career Center has found an increase in students keeping the connection through sports and band at their home high school.
Career Center students electing to participate in fall sports or marching band at their associate school are: BELPRE HIGH SCHOOL – Alex Earley, football; Michelle George, band; FORT FRYE HIGH SCHOOL – Justin Duskey, football; Nate Dyar, football; Ben Erb, golf; Brent Welch, golf; FRONTIER HIGH SCHOOL – Andy Davis, football; Shane Dye, football; Charity McCauley, cheerleading; Sarah Miller, volleyball; MARIETTA HIGH SCHOOL – Bethany Cataldo, swimming; Ben Foster, choir; Tessa Hendershot, band; Jeffrey Loane, football; Brittany Stollar, tennis; WARREN HIGH SCHOOL – Richard Farmer, football; Stephen Morris, cross country; WATERFORD HIGH SCHOOL – Dustin Anderson, football; Albert Baltzer, football; Anthony Dailey, band; Lauren Greene, volleyball; Adam Husk, football; Katie Jadwin, cheerleading; Andy Jones, football; Kyle Kincaid, football; Jeffrey McCutcheon, football; Allen Nutter, football; Terrence Schaad, football; Wyatt Schmitt, football; Ryan Schrader, football; Corey Smith, football; Jacob Snyder, band.
In addition, every student at the Career Center is a member of a club from his/her technical training area and the respective chapter divisions. Those activities include participation at the local, regional, state, and national levels. Students also have the opportunity to be inducted into the Career Center Chapter of the National Career/Technical Honor Society and participate in the Career Center student council.

Mathematics Instructor Learns in San Diego
August 29th, 2005

Sponsored by the Ohio Navy Recruiting Command, Washington County Career Center math instructor Vince Elder participated in the Educator Orientation Program held in San Diego, California. The program’s goal is to inform teachers and youth of educational and career opportunities in the Navy.
Elder, along with 18 educators across the state of Ohio, was selected for the educational training which included the four sections of the Navy: air, sea, land and subsurface. At the Naval Amphibious base on North Coronado, they toured a Guided Missile Cruiser and viewed landing ships. Visiting Point Loma, Elder and others toured a nuclear submarine. In addition, the educators were exposed to the Navy Seals training viewing the Basic Underwater Demolition School, and they toured the Naval Medical Center and participated in the School of Health Sciences.
The group was exposed to a wide variety of military careers. A majority of the military jobs available are highly technical; therefore, in order to fulfill the job requirements, recruiters emphasized the need for new recruits to possess strong backgrounds in math, science, and technical education such as the Career Center provides.
