Science Department
Integrated Science:
This science course is designed to give the student a basic background in the four major areas of science. Students will become familiar with how their vocational program uses the scientific concepts such as: scientific method, impact on environment, and the chemistry and physics behind why things happen. While the majority of class time is used doing hands-on activities, all other major concepts are covered in the Holt-Science Spectrum textbook.
Biology:
Biology is the study of life, both plant and animal. Life centered vocational programs will make several connections throughout this course. Topics covered in the Holt-Visualizing Life textbook range from cells, bacteria, ecosystems, plants and the human body. Students will gain this knowledge through hands-on laboratory exercises, dissections and various classroom activities.
Chemistry:
Chemistry is the study of matter and reactions. The students will gain a solid grounding in basic chemical principles and skills needed for college. Students interested in pursuing vocational education in Health, Engineering and Cosmetology would find this course most beneficial. The textbook for this class is Pearson Chemistry by Wilbraham, Staley Matta & Waterman.
Environmental Science:
Environmental science is the study of interactions among physical, chemical, and biological components of the environment. This class will investigate issues dealing with climate change, conservation, biodiversity, water quality, soil contamination, use of natural resources, waste management, sustainable development, disaster reduction, and environmental pollution. Students will gain an appreciation of the Earth and its ecosystems using the Holt Environmental Science textbook.
