Mathematics Department
Math course at the Career Center include college-prep material taught with an emphasis on technical applications. Courses are aligned to the Ohio Content Standards and Ohio Graduation Test material. We have integrated several technology components in our classes. These include the Texas Instruments Navigator System, graphing calculators, Geometer’s Sketchpad, and Smart Board technologies. Please contact us with any questions.
Courses Offered:
Transitions Math
Transitions Math is designed to help students with the skills they need to pass the Ohio Graduation Test. Students will be looking into skills from both Algebra and Geometry. While in the class, the students work extensively on skills such as solving equations, working with graphs, both graphing equations and interpreting graphs. Students will also work with using equations to find area, volume, and surface area of different geometric figures. The class will focus on the nature of the problems that are assessed on the Ohio Graduation Test.
Algebra I
Algebra I is a study of the language, concepts, and techniques of mathematics that will prepare students to approach and solve problems following a logical succession of steps. Skills taught in the course prepare students for upper level math and science courses and have practical uses.
Algebra II
Algebra II is a course which reviews the concepts taught in Algebra I and begins an investigation of advanced algebraic concepts, including; systems of linear equations, quadratic equations, complex numbers, conic sections, exponential functions and matrices and determinants, and trigonometric functions and vectors.
Applied Geometry
Geometry is a mathematical course that will focus on ideas and applications concerning shapes, visualizations, diagrams, and other items and how they can be analyzed and manipulated using mathematical skills of reasoning and numerical operations. We will draw on other topics addressed in other math classes, including Algebra, such as measurement and equations. Topics include reasoning, right triangle trigonometry, plane Geometry, similarity, and three-dimensional geometry.
Advanced Math
This is a course that is designed to expose students to mathematical ideas and concepts beyond the traditional high school Algebra II course. It includes a short, but detailed, review of Algebra II and will progress through several key concepts of trigonometry. Included in this course is an introduction to advanced concepts traditionally examined in a College Algebra or Pre-Calculus course.
Financial Math
This is a "Senior -Only" who have successfully completed Algebra 2, and will count as one of th three mathematic credits required for graduation in the State of Ohio. This course will help students think and reason in an organized manner, as well as gain insights into everyday mathematical problem solving. It includes "real life" topics, such as taxes, personal finance, purchasing, finance, housing, insurance, transportation and investment. This course features expamples in a problem-solving format that allows students to use mathematical skills in consumer situations.
Pre-Calculus
This is a course that is designed to expose students to mathematical ideas and concepts beyond the traditional high school Algebra II. We will include a short, but detailed, review of your Algebra II course. We will focus mainly on the study of functions, the nature of their graphs, and their applications across several fields. This course, along with a semester course in Trigonometry, will preare students to study Calculus-level mathematics.
This course is offered with an option for dual-credit with Washington State Community College. Students with at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA can opt to enroll for credit in Washington State's College Algebra course. The course requirements will be the same, but students will be required to take a college-offered exam at the end of each chapter. More information will be available to students in the first few weeks of the semester. The course textbook is the same as Washington State's text. Students will also have access to online supplemental practice and resources.
Trigonometry
This is a course that is designed to expose students to the topics of college-level trigonometry. We will study the classical topics of trig, functions, graphs, and applications. We will also look at vectors, parametric equations, and other topics as time permits.
